(More customer reviews)Remarkable High Style Late Victorian Sourcebook for the `Free Classical,' `Colonial Revival' and Queen Anne Styles.
"Barber's Turn-of-the-Century Houses: Elevations and Floor Plans" is a wonderful record of some of the house plans offered by George Barber & Co. in 1901. His Knoxville, Tennessee, mail-order plan firm was one of the most successful architectural businesses in late Victorian America. There are homes, and a few business blocks, built from his plans in virtually every state in the Union.
As an architectural historian and preservationist of some 40 years experience, I use the paperback editions of his books for both my home and `auto-library,' so I have ready access to his designs as I drive, researching and recording American architecture. Especially interesting are the late Victorian era homes inspired by his designs, but apparently not produced by his firm.
Finally, this book, and other reprints of his firm's catalogues, provide priceless period descriptions of architectural styles, the variety of styles available at any given moment, and changing domestic requirements as recorded in the home plans. Wowza!
A very valuable resource!
